Mommy-and-me style is ubiquitous on social media, but coordinating your clothes with your child’s is a gamble. Matching can read as cute or cloying depending on the execution, but the results are memorable when done right. Last night at the Hollywood premiere of Cheaper by the Dozen, Gabrielle Union offered her take in intricately woven pieces direct from Joseph Altuzarra’s fall 2022 show. Union’s black and white crop top and pencil skirt would have been striking on their own, but she and stylist Thomas Christos Kikis took things a step further. Long sleeve smock dress Commissioning a mini-version of look for Union’s daughter, Kaavia James, they created a lighthearted family photo-op showcasing one of the season’s essential collections.
When model Ella Rattigan debuted the skirt and top on Altuzarra’s runway in February, she was styled modestly with a coordinating tank worn beneath the crop-top. Union and Christos Kikis went in a different direction, highlighting the star’s physique by revealing a hint of bare stomach. The change added to the look’s visual impact as Union posed for photographers with Kaavia by her side in a toddler-appropriate halter-neck dress that utilized the same material.
This isn’t the first time Union and her daughter have worn versions of the same look. Winter formal dresses long sleeves On Instagram, she’s joined the thousands of mothers under the #twinningwithmommy hashtag with multiple snapshots. Since Kaavia’s birth in 2018, they’ve worn everything from rainbow-striped Caroline Constas sundresses, Reformation’s palm print pajamas, and Genesis swimwear’s neon one-piece suits for a day playing at the beach. Even their Halloween costumes—Clovers cheerleading uniforms, a nod to Union’s hit Bring It On—have been perfectly coordinated.
All the matching outfits will be fun for Union and her youngest to reminisce over once she’s older, but they aren’t the only fashion fans in their household. Union’s dapper husband Dwyane Wade and her 14-year-old daughter, Zaya, were also on at the El Capitan Theatre to show their support for her film. Long sleeve shift dresses With Dwyane in an oversized black sweater and pinstripe trousers and Zaya looking front row ready in floral shorts and a matching silk faille blouse from Valentino’s spring 2022 collection, the Union-Wade’s created a chic red carpet moment that gave their entire family a chance to shine.
